Teaching English in the Primary Classroom

This week, we are listening to our friends’ presentation based on Susan Halliwell’s book. She is not the halliwell’s sisters in Charmed, okay!

Here are the sub-topics of the first chapter.

1.1 Children’s ability to grasp meaning

Children are not born with ‘blank slate’ but they are capable to pick up the ‘meaning’ based on various features such as intonation, gestures, facial expressions etc.

1.2 Children’s creative use of limited language resources

Children will ‘experiment’ the language based on their generalization. Even though ,it is ‘ungrammatically’ correct, but this is a fundamental phenomenon for a language development.

1.3 Children’s capacity for indirect learning

Children can internalize things in their own from their environment. Teacher can creates fun activities such as game or role play to promote learning.

1.4 Children’s instinct for play and fun

Teacher should be creative in exploiting certain activities as children are motivated to learn English in a fun way.

1.5 The role of Imagination

This will be explain in next entry.

1.6 The instinct for interaction and talk.

Children's curiousity can cause annoyance among adults. They keep on talking and asking questions. However, teachers should not stop them from talking because talking can help children to develop the use and the practice part of English language.

E.X.P.E.R.I.M.E.N.T

What do you think about my layout?

Don’t get the question wrong. I just want to relate it with my title. Designing blog wasn’t that easy for a noob like me. Most new designed layouts are from xml file which is difficult to edit instead of html… I took almost 3 hours to design my blog… perhaps you’ll say…’only 3 hours? That sound so easy, plus her blog not so kaboom’ I should mention 3 hours non-stop, okay?

I try and error until I satisfied and lastly, I chose purple beauty as my blog’s main design…

then, I realised my dashboard a.k.a editing board is missing… almost giving up but then I told myself… ‘Don’t be stupid… don’t give now.. click the pencil symbol to edit…’

luckily, it works. After 3 hours of editing and adding gadget plus choosing songs for my mixpod (I love Korean songs so it full of that genreß if you don’t want to listen it and find it irritated, you can pause it. User-friendly, right?) I learn my lesson through experimenting… Good luck to everyone in designing your own blog.

Designing blog is not about comparing yours to another people… it supposed to be something that show the reflection of yourself~~ (Adah,2010)

My first week, my first impression and my first class.

USING AND DEVELOPING RESOURCES FOR ESL CLASSROOM

MATRIX NUMBER : PEH 080057

LECTURER : PUAN FOZIAH MAHMOOD

An nyoung ha se yo is formal greeting in Korean. Hello, everyone so, today is my first day, attending resources class. Honestly, at first I was a bit upset as I need to carry a heavy bag to the computer lab and to make it worse, the only available sit was at the back. Since, I promised myself that I will not complain too much so I walked to the spot and settle down. When my lecturer, Puan Foziah entered the class and started to interact with the students, I found myself drown into the unknown topic. It is hard for me to listen to her as the aircond sometimes made some noise. I think I start whining again. So let’s go back to the topic: My first week, my first impression and my first class.
I already mentioned about my first impression, so I will continue about my first class. As all of us know, the previous class was cancelled without any notice, so Resources became my first class that I attended after a week break. Perhaps I am a bit pessimist because I thought that I can not catch up with the lecturer. Then, when I have a conversation with Puan Foziah, I realised that I can trust her as a good lecturer. I was touched when she said that if I am not capable to do something, let her know. I bet she understand how it feels to continue study after a terrified trauma. She also shared some stories that are fun to listen too. Since I am interested in Japan thingy, the cost of living in Japan caught my full attention. It must be fun to travel and learn about the other people culture.
Today, I also learn the right typing method. The keyboard is divided into two; left and right. The border of the key board are alphabets A,F and V for the left side while the right side are alphabets TGB. We need to sit properly like dining etiquette and start to write without looking at the keyboard. It was quite fun but frustrating because I kept on typing the wrong alphabet. Practice makes it perfect so I will practice, practice and practice until I achieve the level.
